Taco Seasoning Mix Recipe

This is a homemade taco seasoning mix recipe.

Taco seasonings are used a lot in Mexican cooking. You may not know that making your own taco seasoning blend is so easy....but it truly is. All you need are a few spices:

• Chili powder: This is a "hot" - as in spicy - spice made from powdered hot chili peppers. The peppers may be any hot pepper including cayenne, ancho, jalapeno, etc. The "spiciness" of the chili powder will depend on the peppers - or blend of peppers - used.

• Garlic powder: Even though it does not taste like fresh garlic, this spice makes a nice substitute in certain dishes and spice blends. Garlic powder is made from dehydrated garlic bulbs that are made into fine powder.

• Onion powder: It is a spice made from powdered dehydrated onions. It is a nice onion substitute in some dishes.

• Chipotle pepper: This powder is made by finely grinding smoked jalapenos peppers. The peppers are indeed smoked over a wood fire before being grinded into a fine powder which gives this chili powder a wonderful smoky flavor.

• Oregano: You may be surprised to find out - as I was - that this plant is from the mint family. It is native mainly to the Mediterranean region. It is used extensively in Turkish, Greek, Portuguese, Spanish, Latin American, and Italian cuisine.

• Paprika: It is a spice made from the grinding in to fine powder of bell peppers and chili peppers. It is used to add color and flavor to many dishes. The flavor of paprika can range from sweet, mild or spicy.

• Cumin: this spice is native to Syria where cumin thrives in its hot and arid lands. Cumin is from the parsley family and is used in many Mexican dishes as well as some other cuisine.
