You may be wondering "why sugar?"

The answer is because of alpha hydroxy acid. Yes, it is a mouthful.

You may already be familiar with the term as it is often used with "youthful looking skin." Alpha hydroxy is but one in a very long line of ingredients that you will find in many beauty products.

So what is an alpha hydroxy acid?

Alpha hydroxy acids - also called fruit acids or AHA - are part of an entire family of acids, which can be derived from fruit, milk or ....yes, sugar!

In the skin care industry the most widely used are:

  • Glycolic acid - made from sugar
  • Lactic acid - made from milk
  • Alpha hydroxy acids work by exfoliating the skin. They cause the top layer of your skin to slough off, revealing underneath newer, younger, less damaged skin cells.

The chemical peels - that you would receive at a dermatologist or at a beauty salon - contain these acids in high concentrations. In these concentrations, they can be dangerous as they leave your skin with new, fragile skin underneath. Skin that can very readily get sunburned.

You can however apply products with lower concentrations of Alpha hydroxy acid over a longer period of time with similar results and without leaving your skin as sensitive and therefore not as easily damaged.

So this is why sugar is so good for your skin.

For natural supplies to make your own skin care products, your could try Mountain Rose Herbs.
