Mock Shepherd's Pie Recipe

This is a mock shepherd's pie recipe.

Why mock? Well..because it bypasses the oven part and therefore it is faster, yet with the same flavor. This recipe can easily be changed into a traditional shepherd's pie recipe by placing the meat-vegetable mixture and mashed potatoes in an oven proof dish and baking it at 350 degrees for 30 minutes.

Also, I make a gravy to go with the meat in my shepherd's pie...this also is not part of the traditional recipe. If you like the old-fashion way of making shepherd's pie, this is not a problem, leave the gravy out and proceed with the directions.

Do me a favor - after you make this recipe - please come back and leave us a review - or even a recipe of your own.

Ingredients for Shepherd's Pie Recipe

  • 1 pound lean ground beef

  • 1 - 16 ounce - package mixed vegetables

  • Salt and pepper to taste

  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder

  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder

  • 3 cups beef broth

  • 1/3 cup all-purpose flour

  • 6 russet or Yukon Gold potatoes - peeled, washed and cut into chunks

  • 1 cup heavy cream

  • 1/2 cup salted butter

  • 2 cups grated cheddar cheese - optional

Method for Mock Shepherd's Pie

In a large pot, bring the potatoes to a boil in enough water to cover them. Add a teaspoon of salt.

In an extra large skillet, brown the beef. Drain the fat.

Add the frozen vegetables and cook until heated through.

If you want a gravy, mix the flour and broth in a large bowl and make sure there are no clumps. Pour on top of the beef-vegetable mixture and cooked until the gravy thickens. Add the spices and salt and pepper to taste.

Drain the potatoes. Place them in an extra large bowl - I use my stand mixer with the whipping cream attachment, works like a charm - add the butter and the heavy cream. Mash the potatoes - with either a hand held masher, a hand mixer or a stand mixer. Salt and pepper to taste.

If you choose to make the mock shepherd's pie, then serve some of the meat-vege mixture, topped with mashed potatoes and with grated cheese.

I you want to make traditional shepherd's pie, place the meat-vege mixture in an oven proof dish, top with the mashed potatoes and the cheese (if you want to use cheese). Place in the oven at 350 degrees for 30 minutes.
