    flour and salt dough

    Salt Dough Ornaments Before Baking

Basic Recipe for Salt Dough: Ingredients

    • 2 cup all-purpose flour

    • 1 cup salt

    • 1/2 cup water

    • 2 tablespoons wallpaper glue - optional for a stronger dough

    • 1 tablespoon oil - optional for a more pliable dough

Mix the salt and flour together in a bowl.

    Add the water.

Knead the dough for a few minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.

Note: An easier way is to dump everything in a stand mixer and let it do the work!

Cover with plastic wrap - to keep the dough from drying out. Let it sit for 20 to 30 minutes.

Note: For a salt dough to make smaller projects - such as beads - add 3/4 cup of cornstarch to the basic dough.

Roll out. You may choose to roll out onto wax or parchment paper.

Cut into shapes with cookie cutters or other objects. You can make shapes...your imagination is the limit.

    Drying Salt Dough

You can let it air dry - which can take days!

However if you have children, you KNOW that when they want to paint and decorate waiting and waiting...and waiting is no fun - and when all is said and done...especially for you - mom!

So you have another option: place your salt dough creations into the oven at 250 F. for 1 1/2 to 3 hours depending on the size and thickness of the projects.

Salt Dough Ornament Recipe: Adding Color

Color in the form of powder can be added to the dough. This will work well for jewelry pieces. To do so, add 1/2 cup of Tempera paint to the dough. I have also heard that you can add cocoa powder or even cinnamon powder.

We have never done this. We have always decorated the dough after the baking process. Craft paint works well.

You can also add buttons, glitter etc.

To make your salt dough crafts longer lasting put an acrylic varnish on top with a good paint brush.
