A Basic Homemade Pie Crust Recipe

Here is an easy and wonderful homemade pie crust recipe. This is the first pie crust that I ever made that was easy, successful and tasted good. It came out flaky and delicious.

It is nothing fancy, just and honest to goodness basic pie crust recipe which always turns out wonderful.

This pie crust truly never fails!

The only "trick" is to be cautious when you roll it out. The more times you need to roll it out and the more flour you have to use, the tougher it will become. So it is quite important to roll it out only once if possible.

This homemade pie crust recipe is made with shortening. I use a non-hydrogenated shortening but you certainly could use a regular shortening like Crisco if you wanted.

This easy pie crust recipe makes two crusts.

Know that you can freeze your pie crust. However, you may not always like the texture when you thaw it out. So if you want to freeze your pie crust, I would suggest that you roll your pie crust first, place it in your pie dish and then freeze the whole thing. I think it works much better than the other way around.

If for health reasons, you do not want to use shortening then you can use this basic pie crust recipe which uses butter instead of the shortening.

If baking is a passion of yours then you can now further your education by taking classes online.

Once you have made this homemade pie crust recipe, please send me your review. Your tips, comments, and even recipes are welcome as well...and of course so are pictures of your creations.

Homemade Pie Crust Recipe

Ingredients For This No fail Pie Crust Recipe

  • 3 cups unbleached white flour

  • 1 1/3 cups non-hydrogenated shortening - hydrogenated will work

  • A pinch sea salt

  • 1 egg, beaten

  • 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar

  • 5 tablespoons cold water

Directions For This Easy Pie Crust Recipe

Mix the flour and salt together.

Add the shortening and work it in with a pastry blender or two knifes. The pastry blender makes this task much easier and faster as well.

In a different bowl, put the egg, the water and the vinegar. Mix well.

Pour the water-egg mixture in the flour and mix with a fork. When mixing with a fork is no longer effective use your hands. Continue to mix until you have a nice soft round ball.

Place your dough in a bowl with a plastic over it - a dish towel works as well. Let sit for 30 minutes and up to an hour. Some cooks like to place it in the fridge. If you chose to do so, I would suggest you take it out for about 5 minutes before you try to roll it.

I - personally - never had much success rolling pie crust right out of the fridge.

Makes 2 crusts.
