Amish Friendship Bread Recipes: Instructions

Notes for Amish friendship bread recipes:

1. DO NOT use a metal spoon or a metal bowl and DO NOT refrigerate! From what I have been told metal will have an acidic reaction with your starter. I am not a chemist so I just do what I am told even though I don't really understand what the big deal is.

2. Let air out of the bag as necessary or the bag will explode!

3. You might find some directions which are a tad different...that's ok...it'll still work. As I said Amish friendship bread is very forgiving.

Day 6: Empty the contents of bag into a large glass bowl. Add 1 1/2 cups each of flour, sugar and milk and combine the ingredients thoroughly.

Pour 1 cup of this mixture into each of 3 sturdy Ziploc gallon size bags and give to three friends along with a copy of the instruction sheet.

Add to the remaining starter - about 1 1/2 cups:

  • 1 cup oil

  • 3 eggs

  • 1/2 cup milk

  • 2 cups all-purpose unbleached flour

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

  • 1 1/2 teaspoon baking powder

  • 2 small boxes instant vanilla pudding or 1 large box

Note: You may also use other flavors in order to change the flavor of your bread, for example: chocolate pudding, lemon, etc.

  • 1 cup chopped nuts - optional

Combine all the ingredients together and mix thoroughly.

Grease 2 large bread loaf pans well.

Pour the mix into the pans.

Bake at 325 degrees F for one hour.

If freezing, cool completely beforehand.
